I lived there from 1984 to 1990. We actually lived in Springfield, and I attended school at Springfield Elementary third and fourth grades (I did fourth twice to let my class catch up with me, since I skipped kindergarten in Scotland), and then went to Calloway Elementary for fifth grade for a magnet program for gifted kids. Sixth and seventh at Everitt Middle School, and then we moved to Texas following my parents divorce. Dad worked at Naval Coastal Systems Center as part of the Naval Experiment Diving Unit, and Mom went to school at Gulf Coast Community College and FSU to get her bachelors, in between being a PE teacher, raising kids, and working at a lab out at Tyndall Air Force Base.
We went back a couple of summers ago. It was the last season for Miracle Strip Amusement Park...they were tearing it down to make room for more freaking condos. Blargh. Shipwreck Island was still there.
Of course, we moved away before I got old enough to really appreciate it, but I miss the beach like crazy, although you'd be hard pressed to find public beach there now anyway.
