We are sitting and watching a biography/ documentary of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, and Mom tosses off the comment, "Why don't you write a best selling novel and make millions of dollars? You're a single mom like she is. You are creative and a good writer. You should fill the space she's left behind."

What to say to that? I told her that if I ever hit on an idea like hers, I'm sure I would. I could tell her that I don't have the discipline to make writing a career. I know I write like shit on a deadline, and write much more effectively when I'm uncensored, something I'd never achieve with commercial writing. I've thought about it, of course. Anyone who loves to read and write as much as I do surely entertains the idea occasionally, even if just in the most casual sense. It is one of the questions I get asked the most frequently, somewhere after "Are those real?" and " They're HOW big?"

I always wonder, though, if I was writing for financial gain, if I was getting paid to write, if I would stop loving to write. I have several friends here who are published novelists and some who are quickly on their way to becoming so. I have several friends here who are journalists for newspapers and magazines. They seem to still love what they do, for the most part.

I have been thinking of writing some more fiction lately, and if I do, I may be looking for a small group of people to run it by.

Just thinky thoughts, for the now.
